Although they are not recommended in all situations, wrist locks can be effective and they do serve as a practical application in specific circumstances:
– In some of Krav Maga’s weapons defense techniques
– In direct side by side use of our combative striking
Under the extremes of real life violence Krav Maga uses instinctive movements and reactions, and wrist locks do not fall in to the instinctive category. Effective application requires that students and practitioners maintain a consistent and thorough training regimen to ensure proper execution and application.
Wrist locks are considered to be control, disarm and secure/subdue techniques that are appropriate when needed for a specific result. They are a technique that can be used in less aggressive situations allowing the applicant another option when combative strikes are the secondary option for defense. A result of wrist locks may include pain compliance, limited use of the hand/arm. In more extreme scenarios a break of the wrist and tearing of tendons and ligaments may result.
It is important to remember that it is dangerous to assume that an attacker will be compliant or cooperative enough to allow a proper application of a wrist lock. In the event of a face to face encounter where physical violence has been enacted without the use of combative strikes, there is a high probability the attacker will be unaffected and undeterred by a “wrist lock only” technique. The Krav Maga practitioner must have the ability to adapt to changing circumstances as quickly and safely as possible.
